(Source: Teoh, Belinda, Art Made by AI Wins Fine Arts Competition, IMPAKTER, September 13, 2022) The art world is making it sound as if this is the first time this has happened. I would suggest, as sophisticated AI art simulation software has been around for many years, that this has happened more than you might think, it is only now, that the controlled media, is letting the general public know about it. The misdeed was made even worse, in my opinion, because the artwork entry was not even an AI-derivative of the entrant's own work (i.e. The entrant was not an artist of any kind, and the winning entry was NOT based on any of their sketches, photographs, illustrations, or anything artistic of that sort.) The Colorado State Fair winning entry was created by AI code, by the entrant, simply by them entering into the AI software, a descriptive line of text of what they wished their AI-generated artwork to look like—that was it—no artistic skills necessary. "There are many efficient AI programs that allow people to create original realistic images and art from text descriptions (e.g., DALL-E 2, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, etc)....To generate a realistic image using these programs, all one needs to do is enter a text description of what he or she would like [to] see, and wait for the AI to create it." (Source: Teoh, Art Made by AI Wins Fine Arts Competition). AI-Art has no feelings, no heart, no soul; however, apparently, nowadays it is so good that it not only fools art competition judges, but it also beats all of the human artists in art-quality. Is this ethical? Is this a very serious danger to human artists, when AI-generated artwork can outclass and beat human-created artwork? Absolutely, this is a serious threat to the very fabric of the art profession. I believe that entering AI-created artwork in competitions is unethical—unless that is—there is a separate category specifically for AI-created artworks. With that out of the way, let me clarify a few things about my "PENANG PHOTOS as DIGITAL PAINTINGS", series. For Full Disclosure: This series is one of only two of my series where I use some sort of digital painting software to transform some of my photographs into paintings: I have 110 series. For this series, and another one called, "ABSTRACT HEAVY MACHINES", I incorporate the use of digital painting software only if I believe that the use of this technology, will help me communicate the visual interpretation of the scene, in a way that suits my aesthetic vision. The ABSTRACT HEAVY MACHINES series is made up of original photographs and digital paintings of my original photographs. Whereas, the PENANG PHOTOS OF DIGITAL PAINTINGS series is almost exclusively designed with digital paintings of my original photographs. I have never used any of the 'Text-input AI-Generating' software, such as DALL-E 2, and I never plan to use it. I do agree that the artwork generated by these super-sophisticated, AI algorithm, machine-learning, text-inputting painting software, are very impressive—it is no doubt—these types of works seem to be beating human artists at art contests. Nonetheless, better ways of conducting these art contests must be insured, as not to 'disadvantage' human artists (never thought I'd say that), by unknowingly—or knowingly, accept artworks made by non-artists who simply can use a keyboard, and type in a line of descriptive text.
