"Get Your Kicks on Route 66" Images from US Highway 66, more commonly known as Route 66... The Mother Road! From its establishment in 1926 to its removal from the US Highway System in 1985, it has become an icon of American culture. Many communities grew up to service travellers along the road, that spanned almost 2500 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles. Over time, the Mother Road became bypassed by interstate highways, leaving many of these communities cut off from their commercial lifeblood. Some have faded into shadows of their former selves or disappeared entirely, while others have found a new lease of life from activities not related to the highway. All these communities have Route 66 in common. The aim of this group is to celebrate the icons that still exist, while commemorating those that have disappeared. As such, this group is for images of and around Route 66, rather than just towns and cities that happen to be along its route.
